I serve genre fiction writers who are serious about giving readers a story they can't stop talking about. I work with writers who actively strive to improve their craft so their stories captivate readers from page one.
I use my strengths as a coach and my skills as a storyteller to challenge writers to create stories they’re proud of. I provide valuable resources to those writers struggling to get started, those who’ve already finished a great first draft, and anyone in between.
My clients, whether they strive for traditional or self-publishing goals, are ready to invest in their own success.
In fifth grade, I got my first job delivering newspapers. In college, after years of working in libraries and bookstores, I wrote obituaries for a local newspaper. From there, I became a reporter and then the managing editor of a small newspaper in Utah.
I've lived as a writer and editor ever since.
After college, I rediscovered my love editing when I helped friends improve their short stories, novels, and comic scripts. After spending my free time as a comic book and debut novel reviewer, I learned that I didn't want to simply read and comment on published work. Instead, I wanted to be a part of the creative process.
So I offered my editing services to the writers with whom I had developed friendships. In 2007, I helped Robert Tinnell and Todd Livingston edit The Wicked West II: Abomination and Other Tales (Image Comics, 2006).
I was hooked.
The more stories I edited, the more energized I felt. Editing Postcards: True Stories that Never Happened (Villard, 2007) with Jason Rodriquez taught me how much I love sharing my expertise and helping others improve their stories.
Those early editing experiences solidified my desire to do this for a living. So in 2020, I quite my high-paying corporate writing job to edit fiction full time.
Despite being a professional editor, I'm perhaps most well known for House of Fear, a comic series from Dark Horse Comics that introduces kids to the thrills of scary stories. I've also written several novellas (The Wishing Stone and Santa's Dark Legacy) and I've run nine successful Kickstarter campaigns.
Now, I've been writing and editing professionally for over 25 years, having written and edited comics, fiction, memoirs, news reports, corporate documentation, and yes, even obituaries.
In addition to providing coaching and editorial feedback to writers, I share insight into the craft on Substack. With The Fiction Coach, I share my experiences with a wider audience. Creating art can be difficult, and I want to show creators they aren't alone when dealing with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and other mental roadblocks.
Storytelling is my life, and helping others is my passion.
